2 HR. / WEEK

“Grandecitos” is the course that initiates our bilingual after school program, designed for students ages 5 and 6.  It is not a beginner’s course.  It is intended for students who have completed all the required terms of our morning preschooler / pre-k courses, or those who have completed a similar program reaching the necessary level to join this group (determined after properly evaluating the student’s Spanish background).

The main emphasis of “Grandecitos” is still the development of the listening and speaking skills, introducing students to reading and writing in a fun and holistic way.  This course is enhanced with exciting activities, such as music, table games, art, science projects, role-playing and cooking.

Grandecitos - Daily Schedule & Activities

Books / Skill development:  All skills are developed systematically thanks to our excellent and age appropriate kindergarten course book series, which are the same to the books used in the Official Kindergarten Curricula in Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, and many Latin America/European countries.

Grandecitos BooksThe books, specifically imported for our program, are designed to enrich the alphabetizing experiences of 5 year-old native speakers who are also starting to learn the world of the written language.  It is a great tool that complements and reinforces all classroom activities through a functional and communicational approach. The books integrate all aspects related to introducing the written language to kids: graphic expression, literary appreciation, verbal interaction, text identification, text interpretation, characteristics of the written language and text-image correspondence.

All activities presented are meaningful and adapted to the student’s level, promoting the development of all skills through visuals and different types of texts (both communicational and fictional).

The books include stickers in the final pages to enhance the learning experience even more.

Art and Science:  Through art and science projects children continue learning Spanish through guided crafts and basic science experiments.

Music & singing:  Music is used as another effective teaching tool since students learn many new words and structures through singing at this age.  Children play instruments, read lyrics, learn songs, sing, and dance.

Storytelling and shared reading:  Our specially designed reading corner was created to immerse kids in a fantastic world of creativity and imagination.  Giant leaves, comfy cushions, and a very inviting setting creates the perfect environment for our storyteller characters to involve kids in their stories.  Some of our reading techniques involve shared reading, dramatization and characterization, and role playing.  Reading and writing skills are also introduced during this activity.

Cooking: Traditional Hispanic foods cooked and served by the children (quesadillas, guacamole, and more) give students a great chance to learn recipes and the language related to food, meals and nutrition.
